What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine used to treat a range of symptoms and conditions, from the physical to the chemical and emotional. As a tried and tested healthcare system, Acupuncture’s detailed understanding of the body and mind has been developed, researched and refined over centuries. Our Acupuncture practitioner, Jan Hilbert, is registered and has over eight years clinical experience.

Acupuncture can treat a range of conditions

Chinese Medicine is well known for the successful management of pain conditions. It can be used for a wide variety of pain conditions independent of their cause and duration.  This includes: Musculoskeletal and joint conditions – neck and shoulder tension, back pain, sciatica, tennis elbows, carpal tunnel syndrome, RSI. Internal – dysmenorrhea (period pain), headaches, migraines, abdominal pain. Long-term and/or generalised pain conditions including arthritis and fibromyalgia.

Chinese Medicine can be used successfully in the treatment of many emotional conditions including anxiety, depression, stress, dissatisfaction and over-thinking. Chinese Medicine approaches the condition by bringing all emotions back into a natural equilibrium to ease stress, calm excessive thinking and lift the spirit to regain inner strength. Chinese medicine can also be used to treat health problems with identified emotional causes such as panic attacks, tension headaches and Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can also be employed to treat acute emotional issues including bereavement and shock.

Digestive symptoms including nausea, vomiting, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating and bowel changes are all known to have lasting results with acupuncture. Digestive conditions including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Peptic Ulcers, Chron’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis and gastrointestinal infections are known to have symptomatic and long-term improvement.

Application of Chinese Medicine in the field of gynecology is broad and effective. Heavy, painful or irregular periods as well as premenstrual tension can be treated with good result.

Acupuncture is a treatment of choice for many couples trying to conceive.  It can enhance the chances of becoming pregnant naturally, or in conjunction with different forms of assisted reproductive technology (ART) including IUI and IVF.  Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs can be used in different ways to promote fertility, depending on any known factors that may be present – in can be used to thicken the endometrial lining, improve cervical mucous and egg quality, improve sperm parameters. Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine can also be used successfully in the prevention of recurrent miscarriage.

Lifestyle advice can also be offered to complement treatment. Importantly, treatment can also be used to reduce the anxiety and stress associated with fertility issues.

Chinese Medicine is a very safe and effective way to maintain health in pregnancy.  Treatment can be used to reduce morning sickness, improve sleep, energy levels and ensure the timely development of baby. It is also used for miscarriage prevention. It can assist with repositioning breech babies and is a good natural way to induce labour. Other issues that may arise during pregnancy that can be managed with Chinese Medicine treatment include: acid reflux and indigestion, lower back pain and sciatica, frequent urination, carpal tunnel syndrome, headaches, high blood pressure and fluid retention

Children and babies tend to respond well to Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture. Digestive issues, recurrent colds, asthma, fevers, infections, hyperactivity, emotional disturbances and insomnia can be treated.

Treatment can be used for symptoms and conditions leading to frequent urination, night urination and/or incontinence.
